Traditionally, the Bunun people see the universe as 3 dimensions, the nature (Dihanin), living things (Hanidu) and human (Bunun). The ancestors of Bunun regarded themselves as the only humans on the earth, while the other were viewed as foreign species or spirits.
Totem worship
The Totem of the Ancient Bunun is made in the image of an animal, the animal being ‘hundred-step snake’, which is called the Kaviad and Qavit in the local language.
Kaviad means friends or relatives. Since the beginning of time, they never provoked the ‘hundred-step snake’ as it is seen as a sin.
Currently, the Bunun tribe in broken up into Catholics(45%), Christians(40%) and Buddhists(15%).
